Focus This Week
A community space to discuss the China-U.S. relationship and beyond.

Dear Focus Reader,

China and the U.S. are making strides towards a potential summit between President Xi Jinping and President Joe Biden next month. Their recent two-hour Economic Working Group meeting delved into macroeconomic conditions, economic cooperation, and global challenges, underscoring the foundation for diplomatic progress. Foreign Minister Wang Yi's visit to Washington this week, coupled with the possibility of President Xi's attendance at the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit in San Francisco this November, further signifies ongoing diplomatic efforts.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken and China's top diplomat, Wang Yi, engaged in discussions this week covering various bilateral issues, with a central focus on averting the spread of the Israel-Hamas conflict across the wider Middle East. Both officials stressed the importance of dialogue and cooperation, recognizing differences between their respective nations.

This week, we also mourn the passing of former Chinese Premier Li Keqiang. Li, known for his association with economic reform and open markets, navigated shifts in China's political landscape under President Xi Jinping's emphasis on greater state control. Premier Li's notable visit to the U.S. took place in 2016, when he met with President Obama at the UN General Assembly.

Question of the Week:

In our Focus Insights section, we shared an article by Josephine Wolff on the precautionary actions taken by the U.S. in response to China's internet regulations for foreign-based cloud companies and other cybersecurity concerns.

We want to hear from you:

Should cloud providers be subject to geopolitical restrictions that limit their global reach, or should they operate independently of these tensions?
